The unofficial HDI of North Korea in 2011 is 0.618. That is more than double DR Congo's HDI at 0.286.
There are hundreds of ethnic groups there, and they have been in civil conflict among at least tribes and warlord armies since the 19th century. These wars have claimed the projected lives of 3 million. Most of the conflict is in the east as the government is not credible as Joseph Kabila is taken the presidency for a second 5 years. He is the son of long time president and corrupt leader Laurent-Désiré Kabila. Joseph’s reign can be likened to the reign of Assad of Syria as his father ruled before him. “The main opposition candidate was put under nominal house arrest.” A lot of the conflict comes from the resources of diamonds and other minerals; however, the culture is full of art though from music to visual arts.
The fear of unrest is real, but the material for culture life is limited. I bet despite the fear that life still goes on like in Jamaica, and culture is rich. If the country is ten times worse than Jamaica, I have no idea how the life of a family there will have today.
