US Backs Afghan Soldiers against Taliban

The Taliban killed at least 20 Afghan soldiers on Tuesday night, claiming the truce was only with foreign militaries, and the United States performed a counter airstrike against the Taliban. US Forces-Afghanistan spokesman Sonny Leggett tweeted. “This was a defensive strike to disrupt the attack” in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand. “Insurgents launched attacks on at least three army posts in Kunduz and attacked police in central Uruzgan province on Tuesday night.”[19]

Rakhine, a state of Myanmar is placed under internet shutdown and aid blockage

The Myanmar army are facing insurgents called Arakan in the state of Rakhine as clashes have killed 5 civilians, injuring at least 8 people, on February 29th, 2020. The laws of war are not being followed by the parties. The conflict does not safeguard civilians and allow humanitarian aid to serve all needy; furthermore, the government turned off mobile data services.[20]
Arakan is an armed ethnic group, participating in a national liberation movement.[21]

United States lifts sanctions on Sudanese firms

Although Sudan is still on the United States’ list for states sponsoring terrorism, US released 157 of their institutions of sanctions on Wednesday. This enables them to engage in international business again. This comes after President Omar al-Bashir was replaced last April from his twenty year autocratic reign, and he will be facing the Hague based court, since Sudan complied to delivering him. “The ex-leader is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the conflict in the western Darfur region, which left 300,000 people dead and displaced 2.5 million others, according to United Nations data.” There are a few people and firms still sanctioned, who are linked to the conflict in Darfur.[22]

Oil tanker saved from attack in the Arabian Sea near Yemen

Terrorists with four boats were sending “remote controlled vessels” to destroy an oil tanker, when the coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia resolved the situation. The Houthi movement in Yemen has been known for exploding oil tankers; however, there were not identified as the culprit.[23]

Syrian War

Turkey may have a stronger position than one may think as they aid the Syrian rebels to retain their strongholds in Idlib. Turkey has developed into a powerful country, and President Erdogan “helped transform Turkey from a Western client state into a regional power.” The country has become very independent, supporting the Syrian rebels with little assistance from allies. Their army is the second largest in Nato, yet their independence has found ties with Russia. Turkey and Russia will be holding a meeting on March 5th as the Russian military defends the town of Saraqib, which has been hotly contested over, changing “hands three times since late February.” Turkey’s downing of two Syrian fighter jets on Sunday was “the regime’s worst single-day aerial losses since the war began.”[24]
