Chapter 3: February 29 - March 6, 2020

February 29 – March 2, 2020

Coronavirus

The Coronavirus has its first casualties in the United States over the weekend as two people have died in Washington State, and one died in New York State.[1] NBC also reports that the Florida Department of Health confirms two cases in separate counties in the state with a tweet, quoting the following statement on March 1, 2020 at 6:55 PM: “Florida has 2 presumptive positive #COVID19 cases: one adult resident of Hillsborough County and one adult resident of Manatee County. Both individuals are isolated and being appropriately cared for.” South Korea reports 599 cases of the virus, being the largest of a country’s count outside of China. They have also announced 6 deaths on Monday. The Shincheonji Church of Jesus’s leaders have received a murder investigation criminal complaint by officials of Seoul for “its refusal to cooperate with efforts to contain the disease.”[2] February 29th was the highest rate of new infection for Mainland China with a count of 573. The death count for that day is 35 as “the tally of deaths in mainland China is now 2,870, the National Heath Commission said.”[3] Armenia[4] and Jordan reports there first Coronavirus case today.[5]

Afghanistan: US & Taliban signs peace deal

The United States and the Taliban agrees to peace in a deal, planning “for the U.S. to pull all its forces out of Afghanistan over the next 14 months.” This comes after a successful week of reduction in violence. The war is in its eighteenth year. [6]

Malaysia’s New Prime Minister

I reported recently that Mahathir Mohamad resigned his position as Prime Minister of Malaysia due to corruption within the government. Muhyiddin Yassin was named Prime Minister by the king on Sunday; although, he does not have majority support. “The process to appoint the prime minister cannot be delayed because the country needs a government for the wellbeing of the people and the nation,” a palace statement said.[7]

Turkey opens their western border to migrants

Turkey opened their western borders as a result of the Syrian Civil War and Assad’s regime, pressuring the Syrian rebels at their last position. Turkey has been the predominant supporter against Assad’s regime; however, the war is coming to a close. On the Syrian war front of Idlib, “Syria’s official news agency said two of its warplanes were shot down by Turkish forces inside northwest Syria on Sunday”.[8]
Turkey hosts more than 3,600,000 refugees, and nearly one million camp at their border to Syria according to my report from the 27th of February 2020. The UN determined that more than 13,000 refugees have gathered at Turkey’s western border country of Greece. Greece arrested 66 migrants last Friday and 70 more on Saturday for illegal border crossing. “Greek authorities fired tear gas and stun grenades through Saturday to prevent repeated attempts by a crowd of more than 4,000 people massed at the border crossing in Kastanies to cross.”[9]

Nigerian villages attacked

Six villages were attacked in the Igabi district in Kaduna, a state in Nigeria. The assailants numbered about 100 armed men were not exactly determined after they kill 50 people in the following villages: Kerawa, Rago, Zareyawa, Marina, Hashimawa, and Unguwar Barau. Boko Haram and bandits are suspected of the attacks on Sunday.[10]

Jihadists attack Mali army

The Mali army base in Mopti reported an attack at the village of Mondoro by jihadists on Sunday. “A local official said the militants had launched the assault "using rocket launchers fired at parked military vehicles"”, killing about 5 soldiers. The counterattacks, including airstrikes, did not conclude with a count of the assailants killed.[11]

March 3, 2020

Coronavirus

Iran reports 845 new cases of the virus on Tuesday, adding 11 deaths to their count with a total of 77. 435 people recovered of the 2336 total number of infected people in Iran.[12] Germany, France, and UK sent a 5 million euro aid package to Iran including “both material and financial support to combat the rapid spread of the disease”; furthermore, ”The material will be transported urgently by plane on 2 March and will include equipment for laboratory tests, as well as other equipment, including protective body suits and gloves.”[13] Russia confirms their fourth case of Coronavirus yesterday. It is the first developed within the country; although, the person contracted it in Italy. [14] Saudi Arabia reports their first case of the virus from Iran.[15] Indonesia reports their first two cases from Malaysia.[16] 7 more people died due to Coronavirus in the US state of Washington, totaling 9 people.[17] The CDC releases more than 120 from quarantine to their residence of San Antonio, Texas after confirming that they have recovered.[18]

Tornadoes ravage a southern state of the United States

Many tornadoes ravage the southern state of the United States of Tennessee on Monday. At least 19 people died so far, and 9 were added to the death toll this morning.[19]

United States Gymnastics seeks settlement

“USA Gymnastics has proposed a $215 million settlement to compensate victims” on January 30.[20] Over a month later both Simone Biles, the current Olympic Gymnastics champion, and Aly Raisman, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, both feel that the organization has not made proper restitution to the years of sexual abuse with more than 160 victims by their doctor Larry Nassar.[21] The proposal would exempt the US Olympics and Paralympic Committee as well as the former CEO and former national team coordinators of liability. The US Gymnastics organization has responded to their complaints with claims of due diligence, respect, and empathy.[22]
The Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy to settle with victims in a similar situation affecting thousands of men a couple weeks ago.[23]

Afghanistan War Continues

The Taliban have ended their truce as attacks were carried out in two districts, “attacking five of our posts in Panjwahi and Maiwand," local police chief Sultan Mohammad Hakimi told AFP.” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid also told AFP, "The reduction in violence... has ended now and our operations will continue as normal,… As per the (US-Taliban) agreement, our mujahideen will not attack foreign forces but our operations will continue against the Kabul administration forces."[24] An explosion in east Afghanistan killed three, injuring eleven others.[25]

Syrian Civil War

Assad’s regime captures Saraqeb, a strategic city, in south Idlib as the Turkish forces downs a Syrian fighter jet, “the third such shot-down in three days.”[26]

Iran has stockpiled five times the agreed limit of enriched uranium

The International Atomic Energy Agency determined that as of February 19, 2020 Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium is five times the agreed limit of 300 kilograms at 1510 kilograms. The United States forsook the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran after 3 years, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia. Iran has not been cooperative as the UN has been seeking access to two facilities for review; furthermore, they have not sufficiently replied to inquiries of the organization. Some analysts can argue that the stockpile is enough to load a nuclear weapon; however, the report states that the uranium needs to be enriched more than 20 times their current level of 4.5%, having “several more steps, including further enrichment, to make it suitable for use in an atomic bomb.”[27]

China’s Forced Labor in Factories

Australian Strategic Policy Institute composed a report, identifying 83 famous companies that have Uighur Muslim forced labor as part of their manufacturing supply chain in China. The brands include “Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony and Volkswagen.” Twenty-seven factories force at least 80,000 of the Muslim minority to labor. These jobs were given after graduation from “vocational centres”, where the people are detained, enduring many atrocities as I have previously reported. “Uighurs continued to live “a harsh, segregated life” once they entered the workforce of major factories”[28]

US Backs Afghan Soldiers against Taliban

The Taliban killed at least 20 Afghan soldiers on Tuesday night, claiming the truce was only with foreign militaries, and the United States performed a counter airstrike against the Taliban. US Forces-Afghanistan spokesman Sonny Leggett tweeted. “This was a defensive strike to disrupt the attack” in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand. “Insurgents launched attacks on at least three army posts in Kunduz and attacked police in central Uruzgan province on Tuesday night.”[47]

Rakhine, a state of Myanmar is placed under internet shutdown and aid blockage

The Myanmar army are facing insurgents called Arakan in the state of Rakhine as clashes have killed 5 civilians, injuring at least 8 people, on February 29th, 2020. The laws of war are not being followed by the parties. The conflict does not safeguard civilians and allow humanitarian aid to serve all needy; furthermore, the government turned off mobile data services.[48]
Arakan is an armed ethnic group, participating in a national liberation movement.[49]

United States lifts sanctions on 157 Sudanese firms

Although Sudan is still on the United States’ list for states sponsoring terrorism, US released 157 of their institutions of sanctions on Wednesday. This enables them to engage in international business again. This comes after President Omar al-Bashir was replaced last April from his twenty year autocratic reign, and he will be facing the Hague based court, since Sudan complied to delivering him. “The ex-leader is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the conflict in the western Darfur region, which left 300,000 people dead and displaced 2.5 million others, according to United Nations data.” There are a few people and firms still sanctioned, who are linked to the conflict in Darfur.[50]

Oil tanker saved from attack in the Arabian Sea near Yemen

Terrorists with four boats were sending “remote controlled vessels” to destroy an oil tanker, when the coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia resolved the situation. The Houthi movement in Yemen has been known for exploding oil tankers; however, there were not identified as the culprit.[51]

Syrian War

Turkey may have a stronger position than one may think as they aid the Syrian rebels to retain their strongholds in Idlib. Turkey has developed into a powerful country, and President Erdogan “helped transform Turkey from a Western client state into a regional power.” The country has become very independent, supporting the Syrian rebels with little assistance from allies. Their army is the second largest in Nato, yet their independence has found ties with Russia. Turkey and Russia will be holding a meeting on March 5th as the Russian military defends the town of Saraqib, which has been hotly contested over, changing “hands three times since late February.” Turkey’s downing of two Syrian fighter jets on Sunday was “the regime’s worst single-day aerial losses since the war began.”[52]

March 5, 2020

Coronavirus

The virus has spread to all 16 states of Germany. “More than half of the cases, 103, are in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia”.[53]
The US Congress approves a measure to provide 8.3 billion dollars to fight the coronavirus. The agreement distributes $2 billion to the CDC, $3 billion to the National Institute of Health & a public health emergency fund, $1.3 billion to protect citizens living abroad, and 0.5 billion for “a remote health care program”[54]
In the past week, Saudi people have been returning home from Iran through Bahrain, and a security risk that Saudi Arabia has rebuked Iran for is not stamping the passport of their citizens that they have visited Iran. Six people infected with Coronavirus has entered Saudi Arabia without proper quarantining and documentation from Iran through Bahrain.[55]

Indonesian army government propaganda is suppressed by Twitter and Facebook

Reuters investigated a network of news websites, discovering that they were sponsored by the Indonesian army. The investigation determined that the news outlets targets the tense region of Papua with pro-government propaganda to ease the tension. When Twitter and Facebook received Reuters’ investigation report, they “suspended more than 80 accounts … that linked [to] them”. Some of the social media accounts deceptively appeared to be “the work of Papuan residents or "Free Papua" activists, even as they promoted material that praised the army and criticised advocates of Papuan self-determination.”[69]

Ivory Coast President resists the temptation to retain power for a third time

Alassane Ouattara was the transitional president of Ivory Coast after “a brief civil war when his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, refused to concede defeat” in their 2010 election. Although he announced that he will not run for a third term today, his motivation to his past statements to continue his campaign was to limit rivals to succeed him, saying that “he would run if his longtime political rivals were candidates”. “Ouattara’s two main rivals, Gbagbo and another former president, Henri Konan Bedie, have not yet said whether they will be candidates in October.”[70]

Death toll rises in Delhi, India as they seek to recover from clashes

The riots over an immigration law, easing the process for non-Muslim people to come to India, has remained minimal for more than a week, and “the Delhi government has decided to enhance compensation for damaged residential units in riot-affected areas, … [setting] up nine shelters for victims of violence.” The death toll rose to 53 today as reported by four hospitals.[71]

The border between Turkey and Greece becomes more strained

Greece has endured thousands of attempts by refugees to enter the country within the past couple days, injuring 164 people as they “push 4,900 people back to Turkey” according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.[72] “The Turkish government is deploying hundreds of special police forces at the Greek border to prevent Athens from “pushing back refugees” who are trying to cross into Greece, … Soylu said.”[73]

Gas leak explodes refugee camp market in Gaza Strip

At a refugee camp market in Gaza Strip, a gas leak in a bakery exploded, “quickly spread[ing] to nearby stores, factories and cars parked along the street.” The incident killed at least 9, injuring 60 others today.[74]

A four-storey residential complex collapsed in Pakistan

The four-storey residential building in Pakistan illegally added a fifth storey one year ago. The building collapsed, destroying two adjacent houses. The destruction resulted in the death of at least 11 people, and 22 were injured.[75]

Turkey and Russia agree on cease-fire in Syria

A six hour meeting between Russian President Putin, who has been backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who backs the Syrian rebels, resulted in an agreement of a cease fire in Syria. “Mr. Putin, who stood by Mr. Erdogan’s side during a brief joint announcement, said the agreement would help bring an end to the suffering of millions of civilians.” [76]
In the year 2000, Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father Ḥafiz al-Assad, who had ruled Syria as President since 1971.[77] Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has been the president of Russia since 1999, alternating between Prime Minister and President, during the following years: Prime Minister – 1999, 2008-2012; President – 1999-2008, 2012-today.[78] Recep Tayyip Erdogan served as Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003-14, and he has served since 2014 as President of Turkey.[79] Researching their political careers, I find that these people are within a cohort. Putin was born in 1952, Erdoğan was born in 1954, and Assad was born in 1965. I wonder who else is in this cohort of world leaders, ruling since the early 2000s.
After Bashar al-Assad has regained most of his nation, leaving the rebels with one stronghold, the result of the civil war, which began in 2011, was not revolutionary, if this ceasefire holds.

Afghanistan war investigation approved

The International Criminal Court approves an appeal to investigate “possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Afghanistan” today. The tweet that I found this information on said that thousands of children have endured death and recruitment into the Afghanistan war; although, the article therein did not mention the children. “ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda asked the court to approve an investigation into alleged crimes, including targeted attacks on civilians by the Taliban and other insurgents; torture, rape, and enforced disappearances by Afghan police and security forces; and torture by the United States military and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).” The date range for the crimes investigation are May 1, 2003 to today.[80]

Nigerian Army releases more than 300 people from custody

Last night on the 4th of March 2020, the Nigerian Army released more than 300 people from custody. Most of which are children numbered at 233. These people were held in “Maiduguri Maximum Security Prison [until]… they were cleared of suspected ties with armed groups”. “Some of the children who had been missing for up to four to five years, with many presumed dead by their families, according to the global humanitarian agency”. They have been transferred to the following organizations to restore and resume a healthy life: “Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, UNICEF and Borno State authorities in Maiduguri, north-east Nigeria”.[81]

ISIS attacks a ceremony in Afghanistan

A ceremony in Dasht-e-Barchi , Kabul for “the 1995 slaying of Abdul Ali Mazari, the leader of Afghanistan's ethnic Hazaras” was attacked by ISIS, the Islamic State group. ISIS is at war against the Afghani Shiites, who were the majority of the attendants of the ceremony. The attack killed 32 people, injuring 81 people.[100]

Ceasefire in Syrian remains, but an armed minority group attacked the Syrian Army

The parties of the Syrian War cease-fire have been faithful, but jihadist insurgents of the Turkistan Islamic Party attacked the Syrian Army in the Jabal al-Zawiya region in the south of Idlib province. The attack resulted in 15 killed.[101]

Tunisia endures an unclaimed terrorist attack.

A police patrol of the US Embassy in Tunisia approached the two terrorists before they exploded themselves. One of the police officers died, and the four others of the patrol were injured. No entity claimed the terrorist attack.[102]

Turkey rescue refugees after Greek coastguard incident

Three dinghies, inflated water vessels, carrying 120 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and various African countries, sought shelter in Greek island of Lesbos. The dinghies were pulled by a motor boat, and the Greek coastguard stopped their voyage by disconnecting the inflated water vessels from the motor boat. They were left to be rescued by Turkey’s coastguard. The Island of Lesbos is only 16 miles from the Turkish coast. [103]

Mexico State-owned Oil Company builds on protected forest land

Pemex, a state-owned company of Mexico, invests 8 billion dollars to build an oil refinery on protected mangrove tree land. The government received an order by the ASEA, an industry regulator, to cease the construction, and the contractor, clearing the forest, was fined 700,000 dollars mid last year, yet the deforestation continues today.[104]
