Coronavirus
A hotel, quarantining infected patients in Quanzhou, a city of China’s Fujian province, collapsed on Saturday evening. Ten people have been recorded dead. 23 people remain missing as of the report, and 38 were delivered to hospitals. The facility was holding 58 people infected with the virus.[1]
International Women’s Day in Mexico
Approximately 80,000 women took the opportunity on International Women’s Day to march, bringing awareness to violence against women. “An estimated 10 women are killed each day in the country and police are investigating more than 700 cases of "femicide"”. The activism was mostly peaceful; however, “some groups threw petrol bombs and officers responded with tear gas. More than 60 people were injured.”[9]
Zambia gang robs and kills with immobilizing gas
Zambia’s “President Edgar Lungu told parliament on Friday that the attacks have subsided. ”In the last three months our country has been under attack from unknown people," he said.” These unknown people have used gas attacks, affecting 1946 people among numerous households, to rob and kill them. These attacks have been so rampant that vigilante groups are seeking to resolve the situation themselves. “In one recent incident, a group of about 15 vigilantes lynched a suspected gas attacker in Zingalume, an informal settlement of Lusaka.” 50 deaths so far have been recorded due to the vigilantism. [10]
Fire at refugee centers in the Greek Island of Lesbos
The second fire in a week struck a warehouse of a refugee center on the Island of Lesbos Sunday. No injuries were discovered; although, the damage was significant. The first fire on the previous Monday was not innocent “after unknown perpetrators burned down a reception centre”. Turkey is facing a lot of pressure as they hold more than 3.5 million refugees, and nearly a million more are displaced in Syria, seeking refuge. The EU did make a deal with Turkey to fund the refugee camps in 2016, and President Erdogan of Turkey plans to revisit that deal today after announcing that they are no longer withholding the migrants from Europe early this month. [11]
Terrorists attempt assassination of Sudan’s Prime Minister
Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok “wrote [in a tweet]: “I would like to assure the people of Sudan that I am safe and in good shape. Rest assured that what happened today will not stand in the way of our transition, instead it is an additional push to the wheel of change in Sudan.” No suspects have been identified in relation to the bombing on his convoy Monday morning.[12]
Afghanistan’s Election Results in two Presidents[13]
President Ashraf Ghani and, the rival party’s candidate for presidency, Abdullah Abdullah both held presidential inaugurations for themselves today; although, President Ashraf Ghani was announced the winner. Abdullah refuses to concede to the elections results as negotiations have failed as well.[14] The ceremonies did endure bombings, and attendants fled in fear. ““I have no bulletproof vest on, only my shirt, I will stay even if I have to sacrifice my head,” Ghani told the remaining crowd, as sirens sounded overhead.”[15]

Coronavirus
On Tuesday morning Italy quarantined their entire population of sixty million people to limited interactions between people, hoping to reduce the infection rate. “All public gatherings [are] cancelled, and universities and schools [are] closed until next month.” The country has also suspended mortgage payments.[16]
United States starts pulling their military out of Afghanistan
13,000 U.S. troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan, and the “U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan Sonny Leggett said in a statement Tuesday that the military had begun its “conditions-based reduction of forces to 8,600 over 135 days.”
Another development toward peace in Afghanistan is “President Ghani’s announcement that he will issue a decree March 10 on Taliban prisoner release” according to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Currently about 5000 Taliban are held as prisoners.[31] Afghanistan’s President Ghani confirmed that 1,500 will be released today, requiring them to “not return to the battlefield” contractually.[32]
UN condemns Venezuela’s autocratic government
The United Nations published their semi-annual report of Venezuela “Tuesday, decrying ongoing attacks on opposition politicians, protesters and journalists.” More than 4.9 million people have been reported, fleeing the nation. “They are also suffering the worst economic and social crisis in recent history, with medicine and food shortages common.” [33]
Colombian National Police abuse protestors with “less-than-lethal” weapons
The Human Rights Watch received reports since last November of abuses by the Colombian National Police against demonstrators, and they responded promptly, reporting of their findings today. “Since November 21, a national strike has mobilized thousands of Colombians to the streets to protest issues ranging from tax reform proposals to the killing of human rights defenders.” ““We have gathered worrying accounts and evidence of abuses by Colombia’s police, including arbitrary detention and brutal beatings against peaceful protesters, detainees, and bystanders,” said José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch.” Mid-January, they attempted to work with National Police leaders “to suspend the use of the 12-gauge shotguns used when [Dilan] Cruz was killed”, but the police continue to use the equipment improperly. This is one of many reforms sought by the Human Rights Watch in Colombia.[34]

Coronavirus
The World Health Organization announced that COVD-19 is officially a pandemic today as “the number of cases outside China had increased 13-fold in two weeks.” “A pandemic is a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.”[35] Italy mandated soon after that all shops except for pharmaceutical and grocery stores as they are trying to manage more than 10,000 cases.
Taliban defeats ISIS in a region with minimal support from the US Military
The Taliban is taking a more recognized role in the leadership of Afghanistan, and their success to the “virtual defeat of IS in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in recent months” substantiates their position. ““It was a bloody mess, but they did it,” General Kenneth McKenzie, head of the US Central Command, said” in a congressional testimony Tuesday on the events following the Friday 29 peace deal between the United States and the Taliban. Afghanistan’s autonomy, defeating The Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda, was part of the deal. The United States promised to withdraw all their troops within 14 months, if they are faithful.[52]
The US Supreme Court reinstates ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy
On the 28 of February a federal appeals court suspended the “Remain in Mexico” for illegal immigrants awaiting trial in the United States, and the Supreme Court affirmed that the ”asylum policy can stay in effect while legal challenges play out” today.[53]
The Nicaragua political and social crisis sends 100,000+, “seeking asylum abroad.”
José Daniel Ortega Saavedra has been the president of Nicaragua since 2007, and he has helped establish the Sandinista junta as the majority political party since the 80s, being the Nicaraguan president between 1984 and 1990.[54] A nationwide anti-regime movement became lethal in April 2018, killing 300 and injuring 2,000. “The Sandinista party gained a 79% majority in Congress in 2016, enabling Ortega to fast track institutional reforms that gave the president control over the army and police, allowed him to legislate by decree and to run for re-election indefinitely.”[55] An “Average rate of 4,000 people every month” flee the country “with no resolution to the internal crisis in sight, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, expects these numbers to grow.”[56]
State police in Nigeria succeed with strategy to curtail gangs
Gangs plague the Nigerian state of Adamawa “who allegedly committed offences of kidnapping, armed robbery and rape among others.” Audu Adamu Madaki, the Commissioner of Police, held a press conference Tuesday, announcing that their strategies are “giving them sleepless nights” as they have “arrested seventy one (71) criminal suspects .... [and] another eleven (11) suspected kidnappers have surrendered”.[57]

Coronavirus
I am looking for needles in a haystack as 99% of the news is about Coronavirus as most events are canceled or postponed today. I am not trying to contribute to the news coverage, but I am trying to collect data that one can digest the situation objectively and easily. I report the bigger news ideas.
The US Federal Reserve announced today an unprecedented series of asset purchases valuing as much as 1,500,000,000,000 dollars to stabilize the US economy. Less than ten days ago the Fed cut interest rates.[58]
Following up on a previous story of the collapse of the Xinjia Hotel from last Saturday, which was used to quarantine about 60 infected people. “The final victim was recovered from the rubble” today, rising the count to 29 dead.[59]
An unknown entity attacks U.S. Troops Housing with rockets in Iraq
On Wednesday night, 15 rockets targeted a coalition base in Iraq, housing foreign troops. They could not determine the entity at the time of the report; however, Fox News has a source, saying that "ISIS doesn't have this capability." The attack killed two citizens of the United States, and one from Britain.[73]
Bandits’ hostage attempt was foiled in Nigeria
A man named “Bello Sani, [a] onetime… wealthy individual in the [Maitagwaye village] community”, sought to regain his fortune by demanding N₃ million, pasting letters all over the village that threatened a massacre with a group of men. The village is in the Nigerian state of Zamfara. “With the receipt of the information that armed bandits had stormed Maitagwaye village under ‘Yandoto district, our men on standby and some members of Vigilante group did not hesitate to move there and engaged the bandits. In the ensuing encounter, one of the bandits was gunned down and killed, and his AK47 rifle used in perpetrating the crime was recovered along with the corpse, while other bandits were forced to have taken to their heels”, the Commissioner of Police Usman Nagogo said after the successful operation, foiling the attack.[74]
Was the US drone strike in Somalia successful?
Results of yesterday’s US drone strike in Somalia have conflicting reports. The military claimed that it was successful at killing the 5 Islamist extremists while, a Somalian lawmaker, Mahad Dhore claimed that 6 civilians were killed. US “Africa Command said it investigates any reports of civilian deaths, but so far it has only verified two civilian deaths in 2018 despite carrying out scores of strikes.” The investigation still needs to be completed.[75]
Taliban in Afghanistan is not following the peace deal
"I would not consider what the Taliban is doing as consistent with any path to going forward to come to a final end state agreement with the current government of Afghanistan," US Marine General Kenneth McKenzie, the head of the military's Central Command, said during a Senate hearing. There have been a lot of movements in Afghanistan that I have been covering in my reports, and the Taliban appears to be taking full advantage of the treaty to get foreign intervention out of the country. The peace deal requires open talks between the Taliban and the government; however, the Taliban is demanding that all Taliban 5,000 prisoners be freed before talks. They are at a standstill as 1500 men were announced their freedom on Wednesday. Taliban’s aggression is recognized as unmoderated.[76]

Precision air strike may not have been very precise in Iraq
The United States conducted counter-airstrikes against Hezbollah militants for the rocket attack yesterday. “The Pentagon said the strikes targeted five weapons stores used by Kataib Hezbollah militants, including facilities housing arms used in past attacks on US-led coalition troops.” A religious leader claims that a construction worker was killed at an Imam Huessin Holy Shrine airport construction site.[90]
Greece swears in their first woman President
Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou was chosen in their election last January to be the next president. She was previously a senior judge. President Sakellaropoulou is Greece’s first woman president, and she faces the Coronavirus with 117 infected people and one death as well as the country being the frontlines of the refugee crisis of Syria, since Turkey is no longer retaining refugees. She was sworn in today with a mostly empty parliament hall due to the virus.[91]
Russian President Putin seeks constitutional right to run again for office in 2024.
Russia has 85 regional parliaments, and they voted for the constitutional amendment that would reset the country’s “Basic Law”. This reset would make the government not recognize Vladimir Putin’s previous two six year terms in office, allowing him to run another two times for president. This would also allow him to be president of Russia until 2036.[92] “The Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) has received the results of voting in all 85 regional parliaments,” said Klishas. “They are all positive.”[93]
Thailand’s Pro-democracy protests returns after 6 years of inactivity
Thailand’s government is partial to military ruling the nation, and citizens seek representation through democracy. Hundreds of people protest for the first time since the 2014 coup today. Protests made “rounds of street politics over the last 14 years.” The people seek a government for the people as “an army-scripted constitution that critics say gave Prayut an unfair advantage.” Prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was an army chief at one time, and he was elected to his role about a year ago. “The powerful military has carried out 12 successful coups in nearly 90 years and remains lodged in the nation's politics.”[94]
Evidence mounds of Pakistan’s binding of media
“Mir Shakilur Rahman is the editor-in-chief of the Jang group which owns some of Pakistan's most widely circulated newspapers, as well as the popular Geo television network.” Twelve days ago he was arrested for “illegally obtained government land more than 30 years ago.” “The arrest is being seen by journalists and human rights activists as more evidence that free media and political dissent are being silenced in Pakistan.”[95]
