February 18, 2020

Libya struggles to establish government after civil war

Nine years ago, I followed closely the Libyan revolution as Muammar Gaddafi was forcibly removed as colonel, and the European Union has agreed to begin a naval and air mission to reduce the violence and destruction between factions by restraining the trade of weapons to Libya.[43] Interestingly, the Libyan National Army destroyed a Turkish ship bearing weapons and ammunition at the port of Tripoli. The cargo was intended for the Government of National Accord, seeking control over the country of Libya, who are one of three entities. The third are faction of tribesman and other militias. The Government of National Accord is the second most powerful entity; however, their territory is mostly the Northwest coast.[44]

Militia attacks town in Democratic Republic of Congo

A violent militia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo attacks the Beni village of Manzahalo, burning ten houses down, and killing ten people. The Allied Democratic Forces is the name of the militia. They originated in Uganda as a rebel group, opposing President Yoweri Museveni; however, they were pushed out of the country. The militia is slowly being dismantled as five of six of the six senior commanders have been killed, and forty ADF men were detained last Wednesday.[45]

Refugee stampede kills

In Niger, a refugee camp, a majority of whom may be from Nigeria due to the ten year insurgency of Boko Haram, gave into a stampede on arrival of food and goods at a distribution, killing about 20 people. The people who did not get supplies on Sunday stampeded during Monday’s delivery.[46]

Zimbabwe manages debt

Zimbabwe’s management of foreign and their currency required their reserve bank to “approve the payment of $1.2 billion of legacy debt. My understanding of legacy debt is that this will be on the books for a long time in order to pay off many debts of “foreign entities, including airlines, and fuel and grain suppliers,” which will probably be paid off by taxes.[47]

Femicide continues in Mexico

Another woman was murdered in the rise of femicide troubles Mexico City. The body of a 7 year old girl was found dead over the weekend “wrapped in a bag and abandoned in a rural area on Saturday” after she went missing, being picked up from school from an unknown person.[48]

Singapore endures super-spreader event

A super-spreader of the Coronavirus in Singapore attended a church called the Grace Assembly of God infecting 21 people.[49]

China targets Uighur people

China has long been resisting the Uighur population in Xinjiang. Documentation has been exposed that one man was sent to “re-education camp” as fifteen other family members were being monitored, since the man grew a long beard. The documents state that they are “infected with religious and extremist ideas.” Beards are not the only extreme idea. The internment camps’ documentation also found that they have too many children. Hundreds have been delivered to a camp called Karakax. The resistance against the Uighur Muslims claims that they are terrorists. The people have been known to be subjected to torture, medical experiments, and gang rape. Nearly 2 million have been held in internment camps since 2014.[50]

North Korean defectors seek government representation in South Korea

Today the South-North Unification Party in South Korea was launched by a group of North Korean refugees and defectors. They hope to represent about 33.5 thousand defectors. They are preparing for elections in April as the minority group is neglected, where a notable situation ended in the death of a family of three North Koreans, who were “denied government benefits”. One thousand people successfully defected from North Korea last year. The party opposes some of South Korea’s policies to resolve disputes with North Korea.

Valentine’s day murder in Thailand

The day after the Thailand military transferred order to maintain safety of the area affected by the rogue soldier’s mall mass shooting, another mall shooting in Bangkok kills one, injuring another. This shooter did not hold hostages like the previous one; however, he fled. The shooter was not apprehended at the time of this report.[51] The shooting was not in relation with the previous shooting. Jealousy inspired the murder of the woman at the conclusion of Valentine’s Day weekend.[52]

Ukraine manages separatists

Five Ukrainian soldiers were injured, one of whom, suffering death in a fight with separatists backed by Russia. Russia denies the accusation of supporting separatists in Donbass by “Ukraine, West countries, and Nato.” The separatist group appears to have lines or territory protected by mines as the front was not claimed as aggression by either side.[53]

Afghanistan releases presidential election results

Afghanistan released their presidential election result after four months from the voting date, announcing that Ashraf Ghani won his second six year term. He studied anthropology in Columbia University, obtaining a doctorate degree there, and he was an adviser to Afghanistan’s UN secretary-general, president Hamid Karzi, and the World Bank; but in a senior position.[54] He “played an important part in the economic upturn of the country after the fall of the Taliban government.”[55]

February 19, 2020

Coronavirus

The death count of the Coronavirus surpasses 2000 as the daily death toll is not abating, being consistently over 100. The recovery rate is less than 20% as less than 15% are in “severe or critical condition.” South China Post reports this morning that 11,200 are in the severe and critical condition.[57]
The Diamond Princess Cruise ship, getting international coverage in Japan, disembarks all the passengers Wednesday evening, finalizing their virus investigation. 79 new cases were discovered. A total of 621 people were counted infected from the cruise. Hong Kong reports its second death.[58]

Africa endures Pestilences

Pestilences hit the eastern African countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania hard as locusts have spread their breeding ground to South Sudan. Kenya is training their military to participate in the extermination of the insects with pesticides. They have been suffering from three years of droughts and floods.[59]

UN peacekeepers endure attack in CAR

United Nations peacekeepers and troops were attacked in the Central African Republic. The rebel group that attacked the frontline town of Birao, which is protected by UN, are called the Popular Front for the Rebirth of Central Africa. Most of the country is controlled by militia groups. As one of the largest, the FPRC sought more land protected by the government and the UN; however, they were repelled, losing 12 men.[60]

Herdsman clash with villages in Nigeria

On following up on the Nigerian Fulani Herdsmen and village conflict, Herdsmen are suspected in the killing of 2 soldiers in Plateau.[61] I found that the conflict is based on a difference of lifestyle, yet both need rights for common resources such as “vegetation, water resources and land.”[62] The herdmen are nomadic, which seek to obtain the resources freely, as the villages seek to own the land and resources.

Turkey’s international relations

I am learning that there are dominant countries that supply weapons, supposedly mingling with the affairs of the countries. I noticed that Turkey is more dominant than people may realize. Looking into it, I found that India has accused Turkey of interfering with their affair in the province of J&K, who is backing Pakistan. J&K stands for Jammu and Kashmir.[63] I was surprised to find on Google maps that the borders between India, Pakistan, and China are not clearly defined in this region. India calls Pakistan’s works in Kashmir a support of terrorism. It also may be Turkey, supporting Pakistan to firm up the borderlines. I observed a report from Monday that Turkey told China not to label Uighur Muslim people terrorists. Yesterday I reported that a shipment of weapons to Libya was intercepted and destroyed. Turkey is well known to be key for the rebels work in Syria.

February 20, 2020

Coronavirus

2 of the 621 Coronavirus cluster from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship in Japan has died. The two were both elderly, having outstanding health issues. The total death count is now at 2,118.[64] South Korea faces a super-spreader as well in the city of Daegu with 31 people infected. The origin is a church called the Shincheonji Church of Jesus.[65]

United Nations Theme

Many regions of Yemen has been taken over by the Houthi revolutionaries as the former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi is in asylum in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has been seeking to restore him to presidency.  The Houthi rebels are blocking “half of the United Nations aid delivery programs”, and they are demanding more responsibility over the humanitarian effort involving the allocation of billions of dollars. The regions of the country under Houthi control seek to implement policies to guide the UN humanitarian aid, which they have rejected. The rebels reduced their requirements to concessions last week after a 2% cut of the funds for months. UN replied on Thursday, saying they will scale down their humanitarian aid, if the Houthi rebel continue to limit their access. The country is war-torn and many are dependent on international aid.[66]
UN reports today that their efforts to provide aid to the South Sudan people are blocked as well, and they are accusing the warring sides of “deliberately starving” people to their strategic advantage. About half of the nation of 6 million people are going hungry. Millions of dollars are used for personal gain by many officials.[67]

Locust Pestilence

Yesterday I reported on the struggle that eight eastern African nations are struggling with the pestilence of locusts. Pakistan is also enduring the same hardship. The Indian nation has had to implement measures to stop their invasion, and they are currently successful in their efforts. They are purchasing “drones and specialist equipment to monitor the movement of locusts and spray insecticides to ward off a new outbreak” according to Times of India. A small swarm can consume the food of 35,000 people in one day.[68]

Syrian Civil War

Assad has not completely secured Idlib in northwestern Syria as the Russian air force performs an airstrike, killing two Turkish soldiers, in an operation that helped repel an offensive by the rebels with 5 injured.[69]

Far-right man in Germany targets immigrants

A mass shooting was carried out by a far-right man, who ended up killing himself and his mother, “in the town of Hanau, about 15 miles east of Frankfurt [Germany] on Wednesday night”. Half of the 10 killed were citizens of Turkey.[70] German Chancellor Merkel condemns racism. "This poison exists in our society, and it's to blame for too many tragic events."

Russia targets the country Georgia with cyberattack

A wide spread cyberattack on October 28, 2019 in the country of Georgia, taking down many “state, private, and media websites” as well as a couple “private television stations”, was determined to be orchestrated by a Russian “military intelligence service, commonly known as the GRU” in a joint announcement with Britain and the United States today. According to Georgia’s “foreign ministry spokesman Vladimer Konstantinidi”, “causing anxiety among the general public”, Russia targeted Georgia because it is a former Soviet nation[71]

Russia hires Mexican as spy

Russia hired a Mexican citizen to spy and provide information concerning a U.S. operation, monitoring them. The information was a picture of one of the vehicles’ license plate that participated in the U.S. operation. The Mexican was arrested, and the picture was found on his wife’s phone in the recently deleted images file. He did confess that the allegations were accurate.[72]

February 21, 2020

Coronavirus

411 new cases of the Coronavirus were confirmed on Thursday in the epicenter of Wuhan city in the Hubei Province of China. I reported yesterday that the infection rate is not reducing, being about 100, but the rate has spiked as the death toll has increased to 2,249.[73] One reason for the spike is that 271 were detected as infected in Wuhan prisons. Eleven officials were dismissed due their oversight.[74] 1451 patients were discharged after recovery on Thursday, adding to the total of 11,788 from the Wuhan medical facilities.[75]

Infections spread from cruise ship

Two passengers that disembarked the Diamond Princess Cruise ship were discovered to be infected after arriving in their home country of Australia from Japan. The detection process of the people may not be as thorough as expected.[76] 11 were detected in the United States as well in Nebraska from the cruise.[77]

Iran holds elections

The parliamentary election in Iran is happening this week, and the execution of it has been corrupt as thousands of people have been disqualified from running. Ahmad Jannati, the official who is partially responsible for the qualification process, was given notice that he and four others were sanctioned by the United States. The four others are the following: “Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, Siamak Rahpeyk, Mohammad Hasan Sadeghi Moghadam and Mohammad Yazdi. The United States does not approve of how the election is being conducted.[78]

Syrian rebel attack fails

Although the Syrian rebel’s attack failed yesterday, their airstrikes killed more than 50 of Syrian soldiers on the front at Idlib in northwestern Syria.[79]

South Sudan negotiate peace deal

South Sudan has taken a crucial step to a united government as Riek Machar has agreed to be the vice president of President Salvar Kiir. Riek Machar will be sworn-in to his new role on Saturday. He will be the president’s fifth vice president. The negotiation between the opposing parties included “the dissolution of all institutions at national and state levels.”[80] They have a lot of work to do ahead of them to appoint new officials throughout the country.

Colombian drug trafficking intercepted at Panama

Panama’s National Aeronaval Service observed a semi-submersible vessel on a patrol. They discovered that it was a Colombian delivery of 5 tons of drugs. 4 were arrested. The submarine was homemade, and most of the time drug submarines are hard to find. They are easily detected by aircraft and when they have been informed previously of the shipment.[81]

Tesla resumes construction in Germany

Tesla resumes the clearing of their land in Gruenheide, Brandenburg near Berlin for their new gigafactory as courts stopped them for the second time this month with several environmental groups petitioned the cancellation of the project.  The construction was approved and praised by Germany’s government for business with Tesla, and the court has concluded their delays of the project as they have confirmed that this is their final ruling.[82]

February 22, 2020

Coronavirus

Today is the second day of new cases over 400 as South Korea counts 229. 200 of the newly infected were related to the Daegu church super-spreader at the Shincheonji church of Jesus.[83] One of the reported cases was an employee of Samsung at a small factory in the city of Gumi near the super-spreader event. They closed the facility down immediately at the discovery, placing his close colleagues on self-quarantine.[84]

Myanmar Filmmaker released from prison

Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi, a well-known filmmaker, in Myanmar was sentence to one year in August last year for criticizing the military on Facebook, and he was released seven months later after possible justice reform as he says that “The prison law in Myanmar is out of date and needs to be replaced.”[85]

Algeria protests

The ruling elite of Algeria have been facing a year of pressure to step down as the demonstrators “mark the first anniversary of a protest movement.”[86] In April 2019 President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned after ruling for five four year terms, totaling twenty years, due to the movement.[87]

US withdraws troops from Iran

Around 3000 troops of the United States army are returning home from “Iran and its proxies in the region” including Iraq and Kuwait. They are members of the “rapid-response force”, who were called in “the most significant no-notice deployment of military forces in more than 30 year” according to the 82nd Airborne Division Facebook page.[88] These troops were sent to help relieve tension as a result of the Iran backed attack at the US embassy on December 31, 2019.[89]
Afghan “Reduction in Violence” prepares for peace deal
Although the Taliban and the United State have confirmed to sign an agreement on February 29, 2020 in Afghanistan, the Taliban attacked the Afghan forces in the Balkh province on the first day of their ‘week-long “reduction in violence”. “The incidents did not spark immediate alarm on either side” according to Reuters.[90] “The violence reduction period” still seems to be possible to be successful.
