Chapter 6: March 21 - 27, 2020

March 21 - 23, 2020

Coronavirus

Prison riots affect at least two prisons in Colombia. “Inmates started fires and protested violently against overcrowded and unsanitary conditions that leave them vulnerable to the coronavirus pandemic.” The riots appeared to be coordinated for Saturday night. No prisoners escaped; however, management of the situation “left seven guards injured at Bogota's El Modelo jail, and two in critical condition” as 23 inmates died and 83 were injured. Two prisoners died in a separate maximum security facility.[1]

New government leadership of Slovakia takes on COVID-19

Over the weekend on Saturday, the President Zuzana Caputova was sworn into office to lead a four party coalition government. These parties established themselves on an anti-corruption agenda. “OLANO, known for anti-corruption publicity stunts, won a quarter of the votes in the February 29 election.” The new coalition leans right as the previous “centre-left Smer party that had ruled since 2012, a period of solid growth, though its popularity slipped after the 2018 murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee which led to massive street protests.”[9]

North Korea continue missile development

On Saturday North Korea declared the Supreme People’s Assembly, a “gathering almost 700 of the country’s leaders”, is scheduled for April before “two projectiles that appeared to be short-range ballistic missiles [were launched] into the sea”. This is the third missile demonstration this month. The coast guard of Japan stated that the missiles landed outside of their water territory.[10]

Election polls are redone in Cameroon

On my report on February 25, 2020 I reported concerning Cameroon that “the Constitutional Council announced that they are canceling the legislative election results of [two separatists] regions”, and the election polls were ran again yesterday on Sunday. These separatists speak English as opposed to the majority of the nation that speak French. Ten of the separatist camps were destroyed “as well as seizing rebel vehicles and weapons and killing a number of their fighters, including a commander.” These operations were carried out over the past week, and the military reported that “24 separatists who vowed to disrupt Sunday's election rerun in the country's English-speaking regions” were killed.[11]

Trump antimalarial medicine recommendation lead to two poisoned in Nigeria due to overdose.

U.S. President Donald Trump recommended the use of antimalarial medicine to combat COVID-19 late last week, stating that chloroquine “had shown “tremendous promise” to treat the new illness.” “Two people were hospitalized in Lagos for chloroquine overdoses, Oreoluwa Finnih, senior health assistant to the governor of Lagos, said in an interview.” The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control tweeted. “Please DO NOT engage in self-medication. This will cause harm and can lead to death.” “WHO has NOT approved the use of chloroquine for COVID19 management.”[12]

Hong Kong protests

More than 100 protesters against the Chinese government mark that members of a Triad gang mob attacked them eight months prior on the 21st of July, 2019. 45 people were counted injured at Hong Kong’s Yuen Long district train station after the white-shirted men’s indiscriminate attack with metal and wood poles. None of them were arrested despite questioning; however, they were applauded. Junius Ho, a Beijing loyalist lawmaker, shook hands with a gangster. “On Saturday, demonstrators started a fire on Tai Tong Road and blocked some lanes in the district, prompting officers to rush to the area soon before 9pm to disperse the crowd” with tear gas and other means.[13]

Overnight storm washes away part of bridge in Indiana, USA

On Thursday a night storm of two to three inches of rain washed away part of a bridge in Franklin County. “Authorities got a call at about 5 a.m. Friday from a witness who reported seeing headlights off a roadway, the AP reported.” Two cars were carried by the flood of the road, and six people were found dead.[14]

Algerian reform protests take new form

As Coronavirus quarantines most of humankind, Algeria’s protests, which has lasted for more than thirteen months, no longer cover the streets. They successfully “brought down the geriatric autocrat Abdelaziz Bouteflika last April”.
"Many proposals are being circulated on this subject -- staying completely off the streets Fridays, a (pot-banging) casserole protest, intensifying social media communications ... all while keeping hope of resuming protest marches as soon as possible," said political scientist Mohamed Hennad. "It is crucial that the flame of Hirak keeps on burning."[15]

Coronavirus:  Spanish military find senior care homes abandoned.

“Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa told a news conference that retirement homes were "an absolute priority for the government."”  When health care professionals found that COVID 19 affected their residents, some abandoned them. It is partially a policy to leave the dead in their beds. “When the cause of death is suspected to be linked to coronavirus they are left in their beds until they can be retrieved by properly equipped funeral staff. In the capital Madrid, which has seen the highest number of cases and deaths, that could take up to 24 hours, officials said.” The military discovered some elderly care facilities abandoned. "We will exercise the most intensive monitoring of these centres," the Spanish Health Minister stated.[16] “Last week, one privately owned home in Madrid reported 20 deaths and 75 infections.”[17]

US punishes Afghanistan for political division, pulling one billion dollars in aid

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announces “an immediate review of all its support programs for Afghanistan, starting with a reduction of $1 billion in aid this year. He said it could be reduced by another billion dollars in 2021.” This is due to Abdullah Abdullah’s refusal to concede to Ashraf Ghani, who began his second term as president recently.[37] Both of them were sworn into to an office of presidency on the 9th of March; furthermore, the Taliban refuses to work with President Ghani, requiring the release of all Taliban prisoners before talks.[38]

Long-standing Thai military recruitment process involves abuse

Amnesty International did an investigation into the training process of military recruits. “What it claimed was a widespread and long-standing pattern of abuse of new conscripts, including several incidents of rape.” “Clare Algar, Amnesty International’s senior director for Research, Advocacy & Policy, said [the following:]
“Abuses of new conscripts in the Thai military have long been an open secret. What our research shows is that such maltreatment is not the exception but the rule, and deliberately hushed within the military. Recruits described how sergeants and trainers brutally beat them with sticks and the butts of guns, sexually abused them and forced them to exercise until they fainted,”
Amnesty interviewed 26 military personnel discovering that their “practices designed to humiliate, including being made to jump into septic tanks and forced to eat ‘like dogs’ using only their mouths”
‘In a written response to Amnesty during the research, Deputy Chief of Staff Air Chief Marshal Chalermchai Sri-saiyud said the military followed a policy of “treating new conscripts as family members and friends”.’[39]

Bahrain releases nearly 1,500 detainees

Last Tuesday, citing “humanitarian reasons, in the backdrop of current circumstances,” Bahrain pardoned 901, modifying 585 other prisoners’ sentences to ones that did not involve imprisonment. 300 of these people were political prisoners; however, no prominent political leaders were released. Some political prisoners remain detained, including Nabeel Rajab, Abduljalil al-Singace, and Hassan Mushaima. Nabeel Rajab has been imprison since 2016 for criticizing Bahrain’s prison system and the Saudi & UAE’s military efforts in Yemen as Abduljalil al-Singace and Hassan Mushaima were imprisoned for the illegal political campaign of the Al-Haq group.[40]

Corrupt politician returns to Somalia after escape

Jubaland, a region of Somalia, suffered rights abuse for years under the former security minister Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur. “These [rights abuses] include targeted killings, torture, the unlawful transfers of detainees to Ethiopia, and the manipulation of humanitarian assistance.” His arrest in August 31, 2019 brought some relief; however, Abdirashid escaped on January 28, fleeing to Kenya. His whereabouts is uncertain, but he is believed to be in Somalia after “forces loyal to him were reportedly involved in fighting against federal government forces” in Somalia’s Gedo region on March 2, 2020. The fear of his return to power as well as his influence over those loyal to him in this region has displaced more than 50,000 people, killing five and injuring ten.[41]

Jihadist target a military transport, killing more than 70 soldiers in Nigeria

A military transport was sent from Nigeria’s regional capital of Maiduguri to combat an extremist Islamic State group. On its route members of the group waited with a grenade launcher. When the transport was near the village of Gorgi, the truck was targeted and exploded by rocket-propelled grenades. 70 were counted killed so far.[42]

Another truck counts nearly 70 dead in Mozambique

Mozambique is known for being part of the route for illegal immigration to South Africa. A truck, carrying 78 people “suspected to be Ethiopians, was stopped at the Mussacana weight bridge in Tete“, coming from Malawi. Fourteen of the seventy-eight people were discovered alive as the other 64’s “deaths is suspected to be asphyxiation”, which is another word for suffocation.[43]

Coronavirus: Brazil gangs implement their own standard of quarantining

Gangs in Brazil have been implementing their own standard of quarantining. “The traffickers are doing this because the government is absent. The authorities are blind to us,” one resident told the Guardian. The gang in Cidade de Deus, a small city with a population of 40,000, enforces an 8 pm curfew with a “loudspeaker, broadcasting the alert: ‘Anyone found messing or walking around outside will be punished.’”
Gangs in Rio de Janeiro apply an 8:30 PM curfew. “In the Morro dos Prazeres, gang members have told residents only circulate in groups of two while in Rocinha”. “Near Rio’s international airport, traffickers have told shops and churches to reduce their operating hours.” Some church services are practiced outside.[44]

Countries shutdown the internet

I have reported that Ethiopia and Myanmar has shut down the internet in separatist regions previously. Global digital rights group Access Now has called on the two mentioned countries as well as Bangladesh and India. The article that I am summarizing was published last Friday, and it reported that India’s Kashmir, another separatist region, has limited internet speeds to 2G until the 26th of March 2020, which is tomorrow. This mandate was extended to reduce the probability of terrorist attacks. Kashmir has endured limited internet speeds for months. Let’s hope that India is taken off the list of countries restricting the internet. Bangladesh has ”blocked high-speed data services, citing security concerns.” Their security concern is regarding the nearly one million Rohingya refugees within the country. These refugees are banned from mobile SIM cards too.[54]

Jailbreak in Washington State leaves 6 at large

14 prisoners broke through a fire door on Monday night at the Yakima County Jail. The men used a table to escape. They were reported to be in the downtown Yakima on the city’s Facebook page. 8 were brought back into custody, and the remaining six need to be returned still.[55]

At least 80 people rescued from hostage in Kabul, Afghanistan

A Sikh worship house was attacked by a single Islamic State member with grenades and an automatic rifle. 150 worshippers were gathered, when the incident happened on Wednesday. After a number fled, more than 80 people were held hostage for hours. Afghan Special Forces were aided by foreign troops to rescue the 80 Sikh worshippers. 25 people were killed, and 8 were wounded.[56]

Soldiers of Chad, the African country, were ambushed by Boko Haram

Chad has been in a coalition with Nigeria and Niger for years fighting Islamic militants in the western part of their country. A Boko Haram ambush was conducted on Tuesday in a swampy area of Lake Chad near the village of Boma. 98 Chad soldiers were killed, and about 47 were wounded. One thing that is alarming about Chad is that they have had the same president since 1990.[57]

Soldiers of Nigeria were ambushed by Boko Haram

On Monday Boko Haram ambushed Nigerian soldiers near a town called Goneri of Borno, the Nigerian state. Although more than 50 were killed, a counterattack by the Nigeria’s air force was launched, which did not let any of the Boko Haram fighters escape or survive. This ambush came after the military offensive against Boko Haram over the weekend.[58]

Jihadists target two towns within three days in Mozambique

After The Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) claimed an attack on Monday at a military base and government buildings in Mocimboa da Praia of the Cabo Delgado province, a second jihadist attack was carried out 30 miles away at Quissanga on Wednesday. Quissanga was raided, and their police station was seized and destroyed. No deaths or injuries were reported in the article.[59]

Yemen marks five years of civil war

The Yemen Data Project has been coordinating with human rights groups, gathering documentation to determine the welfare of Yemen. Their data shows that “nearly a third of all Gulf coalition air raids on Yemen have hit civilian targets”, “including hospitals and clinics 83 times, killing 95 civilians and injuring a further 116. Over 60 food stores have also been hit, alongside 134 water and electricity facilities”. “Adding that on average the alliance causes 10 civilian casualties a day“, “more than 18,400 civilians have been killed or injured by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies since they launched a bombing campaign in 2015 to oust the Iran-backed Houthis and restore the government.”
The Independent article that I am quoting and summarizing also shares the following statistics: “Only half of all hospitals and medical centres are functioning, according to the United Nations”,“According to Oxfam, 17 million people – more than half the population – have no access to clean water”, “an estimated 80 per cent of the population -  or 24 million people - require some form of humanitarian assistance to survive “, and ”two-thirds of the country is one step from famine.“[60]

FBI foils bombing attempt in Kansas

The FBI has investigating a man named Timothy Wilson as “a potentially violent extremist, motivated by religious, racial and anti-government beliefs”. When he was preparing to car bomb a hospital in Kansas City, Timothy received a probable cause warrant on Tuesday. The situation forced the FBI to fatally injure him, for statements revealed on Wednesday that he was armed. He died later at a hospital.[61]

Islamic State targets Sikh community in Afghanistan again

IS detonated a bomb at a Sikh crematorium during a funeral service, injuring a child. The attack originated in Kabul, Afghanistan.[72]

US issues criminal charges against Venezuelan ruling elite for drug trafficking.

The United States issued criminal charges against 14 of the ruling elite of Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro is numbered among them. “During a news conference streamed online, Attorney General William Barr said the Maduro regime is allowing members of the FARC terror group "to use Venezuela as a safe haven from which they can continue to conduct their cocaine trafficking." “He said the group flies or ships up to 250 metric tons to the US each year”. The US is waiting for these individuals to travel out of their territory to provide opportunities to arrest them.[73]

US implements sanctions against Iran

15 individuals and 5 entities of Iran has been blacklisted by the United States for supporting the following insurgents: “Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its elite foreign paramilitary and espionage arm, the Quds Force, as well as transferred lethal aid to Iran-backed militias in Iraq, including Kataib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq.“ They are also smuggling weapons to Yemen’s Houthi group and Syria’s Assad. All of these entities’ assets that US can freeze will be restricted from them. [74]

Suspect pleads guilty to New Zealand’s Christchurch mass shooting

The suspect in the mass shootings of two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15, 2019 pleaded guilty to the deaths of 51 worshippers. The suspect is a 29 year old “Australian, who espoused a white supremacist ideology” and is named Brenton Tarrant. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 1, 2020.[75]

Jammu and Kashmir extends internet limitation to 2G until April 3rd

Yesterday I said that entities were monitoring whether Kashmir’s government will extend the 2G limitation of the mobile data service on March 26, 2020. The government extended it to April 3, 2020; "however, such access shall not be made available on pre-paid sim cards unless verified as per norms applicable for post-paid connections," the order read.[76]

UN’s call for immediate truce in Yemen

Yemen and the Saudi-coalition agree on the call for immediate truce by the United Nations. Further expounding on the effort to resolve the war, “Mahdi al-Mashat [the head of the Houthi political office said on Wednesday], in comments carried by al-Masirah TV, then ordered the release of all Baha’i faith members imprisoned by the Houthis, including Hamed bin Haydara whose death sentence was upheld earlier this week by a Sanaa court.”[77]

Sri Lanka’s president exempts military from justice

In December of the year 2000, an ethnic war raged on the Island of Sri Lanka. Families were returning to their homes to retrieve their belongings after they were bombed. Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake saw the minority Tamil civilians, and he attacked them. He cut their throats, killing eight of them. Two of them were children. Sunil Ratnayake was convicted of death; however, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa pardoned him today.[78]

China’s Hubei becomes a black sheep province

Distrust throughout China has been developed toward the people of Hubei province. Some people are not allowed to stay in hotels or their homes. ”People have reported being barred from entering Beijing merely because their hometown is in Hubei.” As citizens walked across a bridge they faced police with riot shields, inciting protests; although, the pandemic lock down was relaxed in the province. “The clashes took place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., a worker at a toll booth on the bridge told the Globe and Mail”. On Tuesday China announced that the Hubei’s lockdown will be lifted on April 8th. [79]

Criminal investigation begins as multiple fires kill and injure at NYC subway

A subway car driver died after it caught fire in New York City. Nine others were reported injured as the fire damaged the 110th Street and Central Park North station. Two other locations on the Subway system had fires. "Right now we're investigating several things. There were other fires that we are looking at that we have to see is connected to this on 86th Street and 96th Street, we're looking at that. We're also looking at a fire on 116th Street as we speak," McGee said. "This is a criminal investigation, absolutely."[80]

Libyan warlords take advantage of coronavirus

A warlord in east Libya has forces making advances in northwestern territories, seizing many towns. The warlord’s name is Gen Khalifa Haftar, and he “said his forces, the Libyan National Army (LNA), had also repulsed an offensive by the UN-backed government of national accord designed to capture its key airbase”. These efforts directly thwart the United Nations’ work as the faction ignores their call for a global ceasefire.[81]

US passes $2,000,000,000,000 emergency spending bill to address pandemic

Donald Trump signed the two trillion dollar emergency spending bill to aid American citizens and businesses. Millions of households, who have incomes less than $99,000, will have 1,200 dollars direct deposited to their bank account from the Internal Revenue Service. An additional $500 will be given to households with children. Some people will receive checks by mail. One trillion dollars is held for loans for businesses to endure the effects of Coronavirus. The Small Business Administration is allocated 400 billion dollars to aid small companies. 250 billion dollars is planned to be given to the states to supplement their unemployment programs. $50 billion dollars in grants and loans are reserved for passenger airlines, and 17 billion dollars is aimed for Boeing ‘deemed critical to “national security”’[82]
