Chapter 5: March 14 - 20, 2020

March 14 -16, 2020

Syrian Civil War

Idlib is the final province that the Syrian Government has not reclaimed. Syria is backed by Russia and Iran. The Northern half of the province is under rebel control. As the Syrian Government is not satisfied with the cease-fire, they threaten to continue their front. Today marks the ninth year of the civil war. More than 3 million people still dwell in the province, trying to understand how they can hold on to hope.[1]

Mexico collaborates with the U.S. agency of DEA, the Drug Enforcement Administration to conduct a raid against the Cartel de Jalisco Nuevo Generacion. The operation was carried out on March 11th. The agents were successful in arresting over 250 members of the drug cartel, seizing nearly two thirds of a ton of drugs and more than 20,000,000 dollars in assets and cash throughout Mexico. Concerning the past six months of operations, the acting DEA Administrator Uttam “Dhillon said the 700 arrests are just the first phase of the operation.”[2]

Libyan Refugees Rescued in Mediterranean Sea

“IOM [The International Organization for Migration] said earlier this month that its estimated death toll among migrants who tried to cross the Mediterranean past the "grim milestone" of 20,000 deaths since 2014” as the UN announced that the Libyan coast guard blocked 400 migrants, seeking refuge in Europe on Sunday. "It is unacceptable for this to continue despite repeated calls to put an end to the return of vulnerable people to detention and abuse," said Safa Msehli, a spokeswoman for the IOM.[3]

Pakistan recent border fence construction claims part of Afghanistan

Pakistan has been securing their borders by building a fence since 2016. The country plans to finish the remaining 1000 miles this year. The border fence has been a source of contention; “one of the world’s most porous and lawless frontiers.” “Afghanistan disputes the border that the fence follows, drawn by British colonial officials in 1893 and known as the Durand Line.” “Last year only 82 attacks in Pakistan were attributed to that network, down from 352 in 2014, when the military offensive began, according to the Islamabad-based Pak Institute for Peace Studies”. “Last Monday at least three people, including a Pakistani colonel, were killed in a shootout between soldiers and militants in Tank district, near South Waziristan.”[4]

Russia’s Constitutional Court approves amendment

Last week all 85 Russian state parliaments unanimously approved a constitutional amendment proposal that would reset the term counts of individuals who have served as president. On Monday their constitutional court approved the amendment as well. The amendment would allow President Putin to run for president for the first of his two terms, according to the count reset, in 2024. A term for Russian presidents is six years long; therefore, the proposal will allow Putin to maintain his position until 2036. “The next step is for the amendment to be approved in a national referendum, scheduled for April 22, when it will be alongside other constitutional amendments put forward by Putin.” Vladimir Putin has been seeking to overhaul the Russia’s government including the constitution with many proposals since January, replacing his government.[16]

Greece border control includes abuse

Human Rights Watch reports on an investigation between March 7th and 9th on refugees from Turkey, seeking asylum at the Pazarkule border gate into Greece. “Greek security forces and unidentified armed men [who may be contracted] at the Greece-Turkey land border have detained, assaulted, sexually assaulted, robbed, and stripped asylum seekers and migrants, then forced them back to Turkey”. Turkey quit withholding refugees on February 27th  due to an overwhelming refugee count from Syria, and Greece reacted on March 1st by ending a “one month access to asylum for people irregularly entering the country”. “Top EU officials have praised Greece’s border control measures and provided support through the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX).”[17]

Foreign coalition base in Iraq endures rocket attack

At “the Besmaya base south of Baghdad late Monday night”, two rockets targeted the location from Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia. This is the third attack within a week. No damage was sustained from the attack, since it landed in “no man’s land.”[18]

"Hashem Abedi encouraged and helped his brother knowing that Salman Abedi planned to commit an atrocity. He has blood on his hands even if he didn't detonate the bomb," Max Hill, Britain's director of public prosecutions said in a statement.
The verdict was determined today that he is guilty of murdering the 22 people.

The United States is not loosening up their sanctions for reform in Iran; although, they are offering aid for the coronavirus pandemic. US seeks to limit Iran’s oil exports as much as possible with new sanctions announced on Wednesday. Their focus is the release of US citizens detained.[25] “The State Department sanctioned nine entities based in South Africa, Hong Kong, and China as well as three Iranian individuals”.[26]

China implemented counter-measures to the United States reducing the amount of Chinese nationals that report for their state media institution on Wednesday. The counter-measure involved The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. “It said the journalists at the three newspapers must hand back their credentials within 10 days, and highlighted they would also not be able to work in the semi-autonomous cities of Hong Kong and Macau.” The number of American journalists expelled are at least 13.[28]

China takes advantages of world’s struggle with Coronavirus, seeking Taiwanese land.

Taiwan was nearly caught off guard as they try to manage the COVID 19 as China sent jets to “a breakaway territory” on Monday. The Taiwan air force had to repel the Chinese fighter jets. “The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has said such exercises are to protect its sovereignty and send a warning that it won’t tolerate moves toward formal independence by Taiwan.”[29]

New Zealand passes abortion reforms

Today’s abortion bill was a reformation of abortion laws passed in 1977, requiring approval by two doctors that the pregnancy is a danger of the mother’s mental or physical health. The bill passed today in New Zealand enables “access to abortion until 20 weeks of pregnancy, with advice from her doctor.” Two doctor’s counseling after testing is required for approval beyond the first twenty weeks of pregnancy.[30]

Raids against a far-right group in Germany conducted

On February 20, I reported of a mass shooting of a far-right group member, who killed nine migrants before killing himself and his mother. The majority of them were of Turkish descent.[45] Germany conducted raids in 21 locations throughout 10 of the 16 states of Germany to eradicate this extremism.[46] The foremost group is the recently banned 'Reichsbuerger' (Citizens of the Reich) group according to the country’s interior ministry spokesman Steve Alter. A wider group with ties with the Citizens of the Reich was also banned today. They are called “United German Peoples and Tribes”.[47] “The Reichsbürger movement is estimated to have 19,000 members in Germany. Those targeted are suspected of spreading racist threats and propaganda.”[48]

The eye becomes a symbol of Chilean movement

The eye becomes a symbol of a movement against “Chile's 17-year dictatorship”, “inequality and the privatisation of public services”. “More than 30 have died, and nearly 4,000 have been injured, according to Chile's human rights institute, which has filed more than 1,600 legal cases against the military and police for alleged rights violations.” At least 445 people have been shot in the face by security forces with rubber bullets, enduring severe eye damage.[49]

Thousands more are displaced in the counties of Akobo, Gilo and Nyirol, Bieh. “The causes range from cattle raiding and other resource conflicts to local government, land, and boundary disputes, revenge attacks, [child abduction], and mounting ethnic hatred.”[52]

Gang-rapists convicted in India after eight years

I recall a focus in the news about reducing rape and sexual violence in India during 2013, and this story explains it. Jyoti Singh was a medical student, commuting home on December 16, 2020.  She was raped on a bus by a group of four men. The violence was so severe that she died almost two weeks later. These men were convicted of the murder of Jyoti Singh, and they were hanged today.[53]

Crackdown on Rebels in Ethiopia leave millions uninformed of Coronavirus

Ethiopia’s military has been cracking down on a rebellion in western Oromia, and internet and phone services has been shut down since January.[54] Citizens are typically informed on the Coronavirus in Ethiopia with information each time they make a call; however, the millions of people living in western Oromia are less informed of the Coronavirus, which is more necessary now that Ethiopia reported their first case of the virus on the 13th of March.[55]

Spring may not have arrived yet after the cold war

Vice-Admiral Johnny Wolfe of the US Navy announced from the Pentagon in the United States that they successfully tested “an unarmed prototype of a hypersonic missile, a weapon that could potentially overwhelm an adversary's defence systems.” “They can travel much faster than current nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles at very low altitude, can switch direction in flight and do not follow a predictable arc like conventional missiles, making them much harder to track and intercept.” The speed of the hypersonic missile’s test maxed out at “more than five times the speed of sound, or Mach 5” The US military are planning to deploy these missiles for missions in 2023. “In December, Russia declared it had placed into service its first Avangard hypersonic missile, making it the first country to claim an operable hypersonic weapon.”[56]

IS terrorist arrested in the United States

Muhammad Masood, a 28 year-old Pakistani doctor, was arrested by the FBI in Minnesota yesterday “charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.” “He told paid FBI informants that he had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group and wanted to carry out lone wolf attacks in the United States.”
