Coronavirus
Iran abruptly becomes the Coronavirus highest country in deaths outside of China after a delayed announcement of 8 total deaths yesterday & 3 deaths and 15 newly reported cases today. The site of the infections and deaths are at a city called Qom. “Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Armenia closed their land borders with Iran on Sunday.”[1] Kuwait, Iraq,[2] and Barhrain has reported their first cases of Coronavirus. [3] All three cases are tied to Iran. South Korea confirms seventh dead as they are reporting new cases increases to above 100 like China did last week.[4] Italy report six deaths as “more than 200 people have come down with the virus since Friday”. A town named Veneto with nearly twelve other towns in Lombardy are the affected region in southeast Italy.[5] China reports 150 new deaths today as the spike reported last week appears to be the new norm with 409 new cases up from an average of more than 100 for most of last week.[6]
India reacts to new immigration law
Donald Trump is visiting India’s capital city of New Delhi today as the country has been facing protests of thousands of people throughout “several parts of the capital for the last two months”. The protests have become violent. They are concerning a new immigration law that “eases the path for non-Muslims from neighbouring Muslim-majority nations to gain citizenship”. There are “heavy stone pelting from both sides” of those who are for and against the law.[7] 4 people were killed including a head constable. Among the 50 injured are 10 policemen.[8]

‘"Around 730 cell towers have restarted," said Naqeebullah Sailab, vice chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of Afghanistan’ in the territory of the Taliban as part of ‘a week-long "reduction in violence"’, showing that the effort is for the long-term. They are preparing for a signing of a peace deal with the United States on February 29, 2020.[9]
Palestine attacks Israel for defending themselves
On Sunday Palestinian militants attack southern Israel with more than twenty rockets “after Israel said it killed a Palestinian militant who tried to place a bomb along the Israel-Gaza barrier fence.”[10]
Iraq protests against ruling elite
As I reported last week with the Algerian’s protests, demanding that their ruling elite to resign for more than a year now, Iraq confronts the same issue. One protester was killed and seven others injured on Sunday by Iraqi forces in Baghdad. Almost 500 people have been killed since October 2019 in Iraq, “facing an extraordinary domestic crisis”. The protesters also seek “an end to foreign interference, mainly by Iran and the United States”. [11]
Thousands of buildings collapse in Turkey due to 5.7 magnitude earthquake
An earthquake hit the province of Van in Turkey. Its magnitude was 5.7. Nine people are confirmed killed, and 38 are injured with nine of them “in serious condition.” More than a thousand building collapsed. Earthquakes are common in the region of 43 villages at the border of Turkey and Iran.[12]
Colombia is the most dangerous country for human rights leader
Of the 300 human rights leaders killed in 31 countries last year 106 were killed in Colombia, and 40 have been killed in 2020 “including a national park ranger and several indigenous rights and environmental advocates, according to Indepaz, a Colombian peace-building nonprofit based in Bogotá”. When I searched for the article and publication of Indepaz, the website was malicious. Many illegal business such as mining, logging, and drugs kill to reduce the awareness of their business. The following human rights activist has received death threats many times; even getting shot in 2014:
“Becerra, 31, has dedicated her life to helping indigenous communities throughout Colombia [to] protect their territories by obtaining legal recognition of their lands by the government and stopping mega-infrastructure projects like roadways and hydroelectric power plants from being built in these regions without the communities’ consent, all while risking her life.”[13]Political rally endures terrorist attack in Ethiopia

Malaysian Prime Minister Resigns
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, is resigning after less than two years of his office. His entire political party quit the government coalition as well. His political party is pressuring the Prime Minister to complete his five year term; however, he intends to follow the agreement before the election, where he would only serve for two years and hand over power to Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of the minority political party. Mahathir will remain in his role until he is replaced. The politics is complicated in Malaysia, and corruption of colleagues may have inspired his early resignation.[25]
Egypt’s former 30 year autocrat dies
One autocratic ruler that I blogged about as I began covering the world news in 2011 is Hosni Mubarak, the former president of Egypt. He ruled for nearly 30 years, and his “repression, corruption and cronyism” was opposed “during the Arab Spring uprisings”. “Mr. Mubarak agreed on Feb. 11, 2011, to cede his powers to a military council leadership” after 18 days of “violent clashes between security forces and protesters, [leaving] hundreds dead”. Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak died today at age 91.[26]

United States conduct airstrikes in Somalia
Early last week the United States performed a precision airstrike mission with ties to an attack at Manda Bay, Kenya. The airstrikes were carried out in Saakow, Somalia, and the US confirmed that it successfully killed two senior leaders of the al-Shabaab terrorist group. “Al Shabaab is considered to be al Qaeda's largest affiliate, commanding some 5,000 fighters according to US military assessments.” Al Shabaab’s attack in Kenya involved multiple fronts including military installations and the airfield.[29]
Separatist regions’ election results in Cameroon were canceled
After a series of events in two separatist regions in Cameroon, the Constitutional Council announced that they are canceling the legislative election results of those regions today. The election was held on February 9, 2020. Cameroon’s president for the past 37 years has been a man named Paul Biya. There has been a “29-months-old conflict”, where the English speaking people are seeking to establish a new nation. In 2017, they even put forth a declaration of independence, which has been rejected internationally and by the president. There is discrimination between the French and English speaking people. 20 percent of the country speaks English as the majority speak French. “The government has lately decentralised some of its powers after a "national dialogue" on the anglophone crisis”. Military men and “at least 30 armed Fulani”, an armed ethnic group, has taken things in their own hands. “‘After hours of looting homes and beating civilians…, "killing 21 civilians in four homes, then burning the houses", The military told the residents "the attack was to punish civilians suspected of harbouring separatist fighters", HRW said, quoting 12 witnesses.’[30]

The effects of the virus on the stock markets were felt heavily in the past few days as the S&P 500 lost more than $1,747,000,000,000 in value. The 6.3% loss is the largest “since August 2015, when the Chinese government devalued the yuan amid the U.S.-China trade war.”[31] As Canada confirms 10 people infected, United States reports an increase of 6 cases of the Coronavirus, totaling 59.[32] 4 are people that evacuated from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship, “CDC officials confirmed to CNN.”[33] Russia also reports new cases from the Diamond Princess Cruiseliner, confirming 3.[34] The first US soldier has been confirmed to be infected in South Korea at Camp Carroll near Daegu, where “the majority of known infection cases in South Korea” are. The country is facing the most infections outside of China with a count of 1,100 as of the report.[35] Iran has confirmed their 19th death from the Coronavirus on Wednesday[36] as Iranian cyber police arrest 24 people “accused of online rumour-mongering” of the 19 deaths.[37] North Korea announces “stricter inspection and quarantine measures for imported goods” as the country has not officially reported any cases to date.[38] Japan reports the first death of the virus. The Hokkaido Prefecture, where the elderly person resides, confirms that the “death due to COVID-19.”[39] France reports two people have died due to the Coronavirus on Wednesday. The second death was only detected that day.[40] The first case of the virus in South America is confirmed in Brazil. Their case count has jumped up to 400, “a 25% surge in 24 hours.”[42] Greece has reported their first case of Coronavirus. She was visiting Milan, Italy.[43]
Greece’s refugee camp development is resisted by residents
About 500 local people, living on “the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios on Tuesday”, protest the construction of refugee camps. They have “seen hundreds of thousands of migrants land on their shores”. They “tried to block construction workers from bringing ashore building materials”. The Greek government sent riot police to disperse the protesters with tear gas. Greece’s current refugee camps are overcrowded, and they have plans to build “five new migrant centres”. [44]
Conflict continues in India over immigration law
The conflict in India continued in New Delhi about the law, easing the immigration process for non-Muslim people, until police began their effort to reduce violence, arresting 106. The death count rises to 27,[45] becoming “the worst religious violence to hit India's capital in decades”. The protest lasted for about 4 days.[46]

Neo-Nazis arrested in United States
The leader of a white supremacist group was arrested in Texas today. His name is John Denton of “the Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi group”. He is charged with “"swatting" calls targeting victims in Virginia, including an unnamed member of President Trump's Cabinet and an investigative journalist.” “Swatting involves calling in fake emergencies to authorities with the goal of provoking a large law enforcement response.”[52]

Coronavirus Update
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down more than 10.5% in a 6 day losing streak as the virus continues to weigh down the stock markets.[54] The Prime Minister of Japan has requested that all K-12 schools close until the spring holidays.[55] Qatar’s Emir ordered the evacuation of their citizens as well as Kuwait’s citizens from Iran Thursday.[56] Iran reports a death toll of the Coronavirus is 26. “The total number of infected people now [stand] at 245, including several senior officials.” More than 40% of them were detected within the past day.[57] San Francisco’s Mayor declares a state of emergency on Tuesday; although, no cases have been detected. “We need to step-up preparedness,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement.[58] The Coronavirus case count is up to 82,550 as the death tally is at least 2810. Approximately 33,252 people have recovered. "Italy has 528 cases, 14 deaths and 40 people have recovered; and South Korea has 1,766 cases, 13 deaths, and 22 people have recovered.”[59]
United States International Sanctions
On Tuesday, US introduced new sanctions to be imposed on foreign entities and individuals, “supporting Iran's missile program”. The countries, where the entities are found, are Russia, China, Turkey, and Iraq.[60]
Furthermore, “Sanctions over Russia’s annexation of Crimea”, Ukraine were extended, “impos[ing] travel bans and asset freezes against individuals involved in the seizure of the Ukrainian peninsula.”[61]
Scotland Approves Period Bill
On Tuesday, all parties of the Scotland Parliament approved the first stage of a plan to make all period products free in the country. Period products funded by the government were distributed through “schools, colleges and universities in Scotland” previously. This wider scale bill, ‘making all period products completely free "for anyone who needs them,"’ addresses “period poverty”. “It can cost up to £8, or $10, for tampons and pads each month, and the expense can lead to some girls using tissues or socks instead, a student from St. Paul's High School in Glasgow told BBC News. ‘This means that some girls [fear] to come to school and don't want to leave the house at all,’ another student said.”[62]
Tunisia’s new government
Early on Thursday, Tunisia “after four months of arguing among rival parties” formed a new government under the newly elected President Kais Saied. Tunisia is credited for the origin of the Arab Spring[63]. President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali faced violent protests, demanding his resignation, after 23 years of autocratic leadership. He promised to not run for another term of office on January 14, 2011.[64] My understanding from research is that this is the third united parliament established since Ben Ali’s presidency.
Landmines Terrorize Cambodia
Landmines terrorize the lives of Cambodians, claiming thousands. Approximately 20 million landmines remain from “a 500-metre-wide strip dubbed K5 that was laid in a fruitless attempt to forestall Khmer Rouge guerillas”, covering 800 kilometers, which is almost 500 miles. Many Non-governmental organizations work to remove the land mines. The possibility of land mine deployment was revived “in early February when US President Donald Trump cancelled a US military policy, employing anti-personnel landmines beyond the Korean peninsula.”[65]
India Immigration Law Protests
The death toll of the unrest due to a law, easing immigration process for non-Muslim people from neighboring Muslim nations, rose to 37. The unrest does not seem to be under control as I read previously. 14 more people were injured today. The rate of violence and destruction has reduced significantly.[66]
Human Trafficking in Nigeria
Nigerian police perform a covert child trafficking bust operation, rescuing 4 expectant mothers along with 24 babies, at Woji in Port Harcourt. Syria’s Civil War
The Turkish aid to the rebel group loses 22 soldiers as they fight for the “last opposition stronghold” in Idlib, Syria. Turkey reports “that Ankara had decided it would no longer stop Syrian refugees from reaching Europe by land and sea” as they “expressed extreme unwillingness to take in any more Syrians on top of the 3.6m refugees it already hosts.” I have sought to help one Syrian family in Turkey, who reached out to me; however, my best effort only reached less than 1 percent of the funds needed to migrate to the host country.[68] Nearly one million camp at the border of Turkey in Syrian in the winter.[69]
Follow up question from yesterday:
“Did any of your readings say why Bob Iger stepped down?”
“It’s only abrupt in other people’s eyes because we haven’t been talking about it publicly,” Iger told the Times, adding that the Disney board had “identified Bob actually quite some time ago as a likely successor.” Bob Iger may be following the example of Tom Staggs, the previous CEO before Iger, who left the company less than a year after giving him an interim role. Bob will be an executive chairman of Disney for less than two years before leaving.[70]

The article reports 130 are arrested with an additional 400 detained.
Bolivia’s Election Results
Although Bolivia is planning to redo their election in May 2020, “a U.S. research center said Thursday that 'no evidence of fraud' was found in Bolivia's presidential elections last October, which resulted in the ouster of former President Evo Morales.” Morales won his fourth term, “which was beyond the legal limit”, and protests have claimed “the ballot was rigged”, demanding the redo.[80]

“Remain in Mexico”
On Friday a federal appeals court suspends “the ‘Remain in Mexico’ measure [that] took effect in January 2019 … [with] nearly 60,000 people have been sent back to wait for hearings.” The positives of the measure that is it eliminates the risk of the illegal immigrants from escaping within the United States, and the negatives are that the camp is in a dangerous area, where “there were more than 800 public reports of rape, kidnapping, torture, and other violent crimes against asylum seekers who have been sent back to Mexico.”[82]

Three are missing, and thirteen are in hospitals.[84]
Sex Offenders increase 5 times in Australia
In the Australian state of New South Wales, the records of the known child sex offenders is dysfunctional and “often incomplete” as the count has multiplied more than five times since 2014. “In October 2003, there were 916 people on the register; by last year, there were 4344. Yet there has been no proportionate increase in resources.” The mismanagement of the situation has become inoperable, letting sex offenders go untracked.[85]
